Welcome to episode 20 of Marketing Savvy.

Gail Martin is a book marketing expert who learned her craft from promoting her own fiction. Find out how to get the most mileage out of your book marketing efforts.

Gail talks about how to find your target market and get your book in front of them. She gives solid concrete examples from her own experience as both a best-selling author and a marketing expert.

I really enjoyed the interview with Gail Martin, but unfortunately, there was a technical glitch in the middle of it, so there's a chunk of our conversation that didn't make the recording. I took notes on what she said and they are posted at my blog Market Your Book Blog.com.

If you're an independently published author -- or even if you've got a big publishing house behind you, but you don't happen to be John Grisham -- you're going to need to promote your own book. Scary thought?

This week we meet Linda Kuhlmann, independently published author who has now launched two books. Learn her techniques for getting her book in front of the people who most want to read it, including some surprising offline methods.

This week's question on the Marketing Savvy Facebook page: What's the most interesting book promotion you ever saw?

Linda's Shameless Marketing book will be available at her website: LindaKuhlmann.com

Welcome to episode 18 of Marketing Savvy.

Book reviews are still a great way to help readers decide whether they'll like your book, even though many customers are becoming skeptical of reviews that sound like they were written by the author's mom.

This week Catherine MacDonald of BookRooster.com and I talk about building a lively discussion on your book's Amazon.com listing. Find out how BookRooster.com can help you get your book into the hands of interested readers and get at least 10 unbiased reviews for your book.

Let's talk about this on Facebook. As a reader, how do you use the reviews on Amazon book pages?

Welcome to episode 17 of Marketing Savvy, book marketing tips for the age of digital publishing.

This is Jan Bear, and I want to tell you about a change in direction for the Marketing Savvy podcast. Now that I've been doing this for a few months, I've learned some things about creating a weekly podcast, and I've been thinking about ways to bring even more valuable content to my listeners.

Thanks to the help of my friend Suzanne, who has been interviewing me every week, I've gotten this thing off the ground. But you, my listeners, will be better served by hearing from experts who can help you succeed in the age of digital publishing.

The first of those conversations was with Evo Terra of Podiobooks.com a couple of weeks ago. If you missed that interview, do go back and listen to episode 15. You may be surprised at what creating free serialized audiobooks can do for your book sales.

This week I'm talking to publicity expert Sandy Beckwith about how to market your book with a virtual book tour..

You can get your own copy of Sandy's report, Virtual Book Tour Basics, at Sandy's blog, BuildBookBuzz.com., as well as lots of other great information about how to promote your book.

With changes in the publishing marketplace, it's writers who are winning and the oversized, inflexible major publishers who are losing. In this conversation, we talk about ways the new publishing world benefits writers and some of the traditional publishers' duties that independently published or self-published writers need to do themselves.

By the way, at the end of the podcast, Suzanne suggests an episode on the virtual book tour. I'll be talking next week to award-winning publicist Sandy Beckwith about virtual book tours and how you can schedule one for yourself.

A lot of authors I know are skeptical of the possibility that they can build an audience for their print works by giving away free downloads of the audio versions. And yet it's been done, in some cases with spectacular success. This week's podcast is an excerpt from a longer interview with Evo Terra, Head Honcho of Podiobooks.com, a site that offers free downloads of audiobooks posted by authors.

Find out how some authors have taken their often-rejected works, built an audience, and then set terms in contracts with major publishers.

Evo also tells what makes a great podcast novel -- or serialized audiobook -- and some of the considerations that go into deciding whether self-publishing the audio format is right for you.

This is an excerpt of a 50-minute conversation.

Podcasting is a great way of connecting with your audience and delivering information in a form that people can absorb while they're commuting or doing hands-busy, mind-idle tasks.

If you're thinking of starting a podcast, there are several formats to use: Solo, conversation between colleagues, interviewing an expert, answering questions -- or a mix any or all of them. Get some ideas for your podcast and how to put them into action.

There are a million great taglines out there -- "Just Do It," "Think Different," "Things Go Better with Coke." A good tagline is part of your brand; in fact it summarizes your brand in a way that makes people remember you.

But for a tagline to do that work really well, it needs to be pertinent, customer-oriented, memorable and short.

Jan and Suzanne talk about what makes a great tagline and give some tips for creating yours.
